Groove Thangs
Groove Thangs
“Lazy Strokes,” “Koko,” “Catch You Later.” If these song titles slap a goofy grin on your mug, you likely were among the rabid fans who followed South Florida’s own Groove Thangs in the 1980s and ’90s. Combining soul, funk and more than a touch of Caribbean jerk spices, Groove Thangs’ music was irresistible, thanks to the singular vision of the Stacey brothers. The ecstatic soul vocals of “Down Pat” and the incredibly versatile guitar of “Bonefish Johnny” made for a potent blend, especially on their genre-smashing original tunes which looked for inspiration to the likes of James Brown, Wayne Cochran and any number of garage and beach music bands. While personnel shifted over the years, bassists Carl “Kilmo” Pacillo, drummer Tim Kuchta and saxophonist Jeff Watkins often comprised the classic GT lineup. Down Pat now lives in New York, but he returns for reunion shows." - Jazz Blues Florida Magazine

Starting in 1984, original funk-rock-soul band Groove Thangs grew from the raw bars of South Florida to become a national touring act and festival headliner in the 90's. Produced by legend Tom Dowd and signed (and dropped) by major label Epic in 1989, Groove Thangs went on to record and release their music independently, including 1991's Jammy award winning album "Uppression". Going on hiatus in 1992, Bonefish and Pat followed separate career paths but gather Groove Thangs together every few years for reunion concerts that have become legendary in their own right.

This year's reunion features original saxophonist Jeff Watkins in his first appearance with Groove Thangs since 2012! From the James Brown-covering Thangs, Watkins got into the actual Godfather's band, playing with James Brown until the singer's death in 2006. After a stint with Joss Stone, he formed New Orleans Suspects, making for a decades long career of funk that comes around to its roots in this reunion of Groove Thangs and their fans.
